Abstract

Cartoons about Russia’s annexation of Crimea in the German daily newspapers Süddeutsche Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and Tagesspiegel present a differentiated image of Russia. On the one hand, they cannot do without historical stereotypes. Sometimes, they are bound by the logic of the East-West conflict. On the other hand, the cartoonists work with means that employ irony to break the very Russian threat they depict.
