Abstract

Almost everywhere in Eastern Europe, the former state communist parties have been reformed, renamed, or rendered insignificant. Not so in the Czech Republic. There, the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia, with its anti-Western and anti-liberal view of the world, hunkered down. The milieu of their supporters, who continue to cling to the pre-1989 order, is so great that the party regularly enters Parliament and, in light of the crisis facing the other parties, is becoming increasingly more acceptable.
