Abstract

In the beginning, there was the Ukrainian avantgarde of the 1920s. With Ukraine's independence at the end of 1991, this art was rediscovered and reinterpreted. “Ugly design”, which was trending around the world, appeared in Ukraine in the early 1990s. Today, Ukrainian book design is embedded in global markets and trends, but it has preserved its national traditions and peculiarities in both theory and practice. Ukrainian illustrators are keeping visual diaries of the war. They are chroniclers of Russia’s war crimes and are creating angry, bold art.
