Abstract

Kolguev is on the “side of European history that faces away from the west.” On this Barents Sea island, the reindeer nomads of the Nenets people once swept the tundra with goose feathers so that there was not a speck of dust left on the pitch. The Soviet Union has left behind a collection of the world alphabet: nuclear waste and beer cans, barrels and gasmasks, pieces of wood and helicopter coverings. On the north end of the continent, the end of times has already begun.
