Abstract

Russia has occupied the Crimea. The aim is to prevent the Ukrainian government elected after the fall of President Viktor Yanukovych'sregime from stabilising the situation in Ukraine. The defence of the allegedly endangered Russian-speaking population in the Crimea is just a flimsy pretext. The Kremlin needs this pretext to sow discord among the Western countries so that they accept the occupation and quickly get back to business as usual.
