Abstract

Igor Kon was a pioneer of a sexology understood as social science in Russia. Long before collective homophobia was dressed up as law in June 2013, he analysed the causes and socio-political function of homophobia. In this variation of xenophobic resentment – which sometimes smoulders, sometimes erupts – he saw an enormous danger. The authoritarian regime is harnessing the xenophobic sentiments within the population.
