Ores and Oligarchs
The Mining Industry in Russia’s Northwest

Stephen Fortescue

Deutsche Fassung

Abstract

Russia’s Northwest is rich in mineral resources. Mining therefore plays a considerable socio-economic role, especially on the Kola Peninsula. The geology of the camp sites and the geochemistry of the ores impede removal. Therefore, international mining companies are barely represented in the region, and the vertically integrated Russian corporate enterprises in the primary industry face numerous problems. On the basis of its significance for the entire northwest, however, mining can be certain of the state’s attention.
